Why is this being proposed?
The Haddow family has had a long and significant connection to Scarness dating back to 1925, when the area was still in its early stages of development.
Over multiple generations, the family played a central role in shaping Scarness as a vibrant coastal destination. Their contributions included:
- Establishing one of the first major commercial hubs in Scarness, including a café, shops and early services for residents and visitors
- Developing Haddow’s Hall, a major venue for dances, concerts, community events and gatherings for decades
- Supporting early tourism and recreation, including attractions, events and holiday activities that drew visitors to the area
- Contributing to the development and activation of the foreshore, including involvement in community initiatives, facilities and local organisations
- Having a direct association with the Band Rotunda, including its positioning and role as a central meeting point for the community
These contributions helped establish Scarness as a key social, cultural and tourism centre within Hervey Bay.
Council has also recently completed renovation and preservation works on the Rotunda in 2025, recognising its ongoing importance to the community.
What Happens Next?
Your feedback will be considered as part of a report to Council, which will make a final decision on the naming as part of the Rotunda’s centenary in May 2026.
